ChatGPT Ads Just Launched in India – Should You Test Them Now?

OpenAI just started showing ads inside ChatGPT to users in India.

Most of the coverage on this is a recap: what launched, who’s involved, when self-serve opens.

That’s useful. But it’s not the interesting question.

The interesting question is: should your brand actually spend money on this right now?

Here’s my take, and the reasoning behind it.

Quick Answer

OpenAI launched ChatGPT Ads in India on August 27, 2026.

Ads show up on the Free and Go (₹399/month) tiers, beneath ChatGPT’s responses.

The launch started with 50+ brands via agency partners WPP and Omnicom.

Self-serve access opens to everyone on September 4, with a ₹725/day minimum budget.

Why India, Specifically

This wasn’t random.

OpenAI has been prepping India for monetization for over a year:

    • Aug 2025 — Launched ChatGPT Go (sub-$5/month) in India first, before any other country

    • Nov 2025 — Made Go free for 12 months to build a massive user base fast

    • Late 2025 — Poured marketing budget into IPL and WPL cricket sponsorships

    • 2026 — Hired Uber’s India head, then poached Meta’s India & SEA VP

Grow a huge free user base. Then monetize it with ads.

Google did it. Meta did it. Now OpenAI is doing it.

Should You Actually Advertise Here? My Take

Here’s where I’ll disagree with the “wait and see” instinct most agencies default to.

I think brands should test early — not because the format is proven, but because OpenAI needs it to be proven.

When a platform is this early in monetizing, it has every incentive to make its first wave of advertisers look good. Better placements, more attention from the ads team, tighter optimization support — all of it goes toward brands willing to put money in first. That’s how every ad platform builds trust in itself, and it’s how early advertisers build outsized results.

You saw the same pattern with early Meta Ads and early Google Ads: the brands that showed up before the platform was “safe” got the cheapest results and the most attention. The brands that waited for case studies got the crowded, expensive version.

That doesn’t mean throw your full budget at it. It means: run a small, controlled test now, watch what the big brands do alongside you, and scale based on your own data — not someone else’s blog post.

How the Ads Actually Work

Ads appear beneath a ChatGPT response — never inside it — and are labeled “Sponsored.”

Who sees them

    • Free and Go tier users only

    • Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education users: zero ads

    • No ads for anyone under 18 (self-identified or predicted)

    • No ads next to sensitive topics like health or politics

How targeting works

ChatGPT looks at the context of your current conversation, not just keywords. Advertisers can add “context hints,” but OpenAI is clear these aren’t exact-match keywords and don’t guarantee delivery.

And importantly: OpenAI says ads run on separate systems from the chat model and don’t influence the actual answer you get.

Will This Change How I Do AEO? No, And Here’s Why That Matters

I don’t think this changes AEO strategy at all, and I think that distinction is the most useful thing in this entire post.

Getting your brand recommended inside a ChatGPT answer is still an authority and relevance problem — not a media-buying problem. OpenAI has built a hard wall between the two: ads don’t touch the model’s actual output.

So the work of earning organic visibility inside AI answers — structured content, topical authority, third-party citations — doesn’t get replaced by ad spend. It runs on a completely separate track.

Practically, that means most brands will end up needing both: an AEO strategy to earn the organic mention, and a paid strategy to show up next to it. They’re not competing budgets. They’re complementary ones.

What About Pricing?

₹725/day is a genuinely low barrier to entry.

My read: it stays cheap for a while. India is a price-sensitive market, and OpenAI’s whole India strategy so far — the discounted Go tier, the free year, the cricket sponsorships — has been about volume over margin. I’d expect that same logic to carry into ad pricing, at least through the next few months.

That said, I’ll say this clearly: it’s a read, not a guarantee. If enough brands pile in fast after September 4, that could shift quicker than expected. Worth watching, not betting the whole budget on.

FAQs

When did ChatGPT ads launch in India?

August 27, 2026

Do I need to pay for ChatGPT to see ads?

No — ads only appear on the Free and Go tiers.

How much does it cost to advertise on ChatGPT in India?

Self-serve campaigns start at a ₹725/day minimum once Ads Manager opens on September 4, 2026.

Do ChatGPT ads affect the answers ChatGPT gives?

No, OpenAI states ads run on separate systems and don't influence responses.

Should my brand advertise on ChatGPT right now?

If you can run a small, controlled test, yes — early advertisers tend to get more attention and better results from a platform still proving itself. Just don't treat it as a replacement for earning organic visibility in AI answers; that's a separate, ongoing effort.
